PromptPay passes 2.5 billion transactions a month: lessons for checkout design in Thailand
In short
NITMX data shows PromptPay handled 2.53 billion transactions in August 2026, up 12%, worth THB 4.37 trillion, with 83.44 million registrations. Month-end peaks topped 100 million transactions in a single day. For businesses, QR payment with automatic confirmation should be the main option on websites and apps, not an afterthought.
The latest PromptPay numbers
National ITMX (NITMX), which runs Thailand’s national payment infrastructure, reported 2.53 billion PromptPay transactions in August 2026, up 12% year on year, with a total value of THB 4.37 trillion, up 3%.
By the end of August, PromptPay had 83.44 million registrations: 83.02 million individuals and 0.42 million businesses. The busiest day was Monday, 31 August 2026, with 101.13 million transactions.
Earlier months show steady growth: 2.38 billion transactions in May, up 15%, and 2.39 billion in June, up 13%.
Transaction counts are growing faster than value
Transaction numbers grew 12% while value grew only 3%. By our own calculation from the August figures, the average transaction is about THB 1,700, and it is trending smaller.
In other words, Thais are using PromptPay more for small everyday payments, at restaurants, online shops and for monthly services, not just for large person-to-person transfers.
Peak days tend to fall at month-end or the start of the month, in line with salaries, bills and business settlements. Khaosod reported 79.79 million transactions on 30 June; August’s peak reached 101.13 million.
Tourists are paying by QR more often
Cross-border QR payments, where visitors use apps from their home country to scan Thai QR codes, are growing quickly. The Nation reported THB 1.51 billion in May 2026, up 382% year on year.
In August 2026, the top three source countries by value were China at THB 1,278.63 million, Malaysia at THB 373.06 million, and Laos at THB 138.32 million.
A joint Bank of Thailand and VISA report, covered by Thairath in late 2025, adds context. In 2024, foreign tourists made THB 327 billion in card payments in Thailand across more than 100 million transactions, and the country had more than one million QR payment points and over 900,000 card terminals.
What it means for Thai businesses
For websites and apps selling in Thailand, PromptPay QR should be the most visible and easiest payment option. A problem we still see often is shops asking customers to transfer money and send a slip by chat. That adds manual checking, invites fake slips, and leaves customers waiting.
Dynamic QR codes generated per order with the amount included, and confirmed automatically through a payment provider, update orders instantly, cut back-office work and reduce errors.
Businesses selling to tourists, such as hotels, tour operators, restaurants and souvenir shops, should check whether their payment provider supports cross-border QR, and present payment information in English or the main language of their customers.
Checkout design details to watch
QR payment on mobile has a specific snag: a customer browsing on their phone cannot scan a QR code shown on that same screen. Checkout pages should offer a button to save the QR image or open the banking app directly, with a short instruction.
Systems should cope with busy periods such as month-end and promotion days, and show a clear message when confirmation is delayed, so customers do not pay twice because they are unsure the first payment went through.
Security matters as much as convenience. Payment confirmation should come from the payment provider’s system, not from a screenshot the customer uploads, and staff should never be the only check between a slip and a shipped order.
Practical steps you can take now
These apply to both e-commerce websites and apps.
Many payment providers already offer dynamic QR with automatic confirmation, so the change is often more about connecting your website properly than building something new.
- Replace slip-by-chat with dynamic QR codes that confirm payment automatically.
- On mobile, add buttons to save the QR or open a banking app, with a short instruction.
- Test checkout at peak times and prepare a message for delayed confirmations.
- If you serve foreign customers, check cross-border QR support and add multilingual text.
- Review where customers drop out of checkout and fix one step at a time.
